Google Analytics 4 Certification: Free Skillshop Guide and What to Study

How to pass the free Google Analytics 4 certification on Skillshop: the GA4 topics to study, how the assessment works and how to practise with real data.

Google Analytics 4 Certification: Free Skillshop Guide and What to Study

The short answer

The Google Analytics certification is free on Google Skillshop and covers Google Analytics 4. Study events, conversions (key events), reports, explorations and audiences, practise in Google’s free GA4 demo account, then pass the timed assessment with 80% or more. It is valid for one year.

The Google Analytics certification is free, it is run by Google on Skillshop, and it now covers Google Analytics 4 (GA4). I passed it in October 2026; the verify link is on my About page.

This guide covers what to study, how to practise with real data for free, and how the assessment works.

Why GA4 is worth learning

Every ad, post and email you run eventually leads to a website or an app. GA4 tells you what happened next: which pages people read, where they came from and whether they took the action you wanted.

Without analytics you are guessing. With it, you can say "this campaign brought 40 enquiries and that one brought 4", and move money to what works. That is the heart of performance marketing.

How the certification works

  • Where: Google Skillshop, search "Google Analytics Certification".
  • Cost: free.
  • Format: a timed online assessment. Google's Skillshop certifications need 80% or more to pass. The intro screen shows the time limit before you start.
  • If you fail: you can retake after a waiting period, usually one day.
  • Valid for: one year.

Take it in one sitting, in a quiet place, on a laptop. The timer keeps running if you step away.

What to study

The course on Skillshop covers everything, but these are the ideas you must really understand:

Accounts, properties and data streams

  • An account holds one or more properties.
  • A property is usually one business or website.
  • A data stream is one source of data inside a property: a website, an iOS app or an Android app.

Events and key events

In GA4, everything is an event: page views, scrolls, clicks, video plays, form submits. Some are collected automatically, some with "enhanced measurement", and some you set up yourself.

A key event is an event you mark as important, such as generate_lead or purchase. On this website, for example, a click that opens WhatsApp or email to contact me is sent to GA4 as a generate_lead event.

Reports and explorations

  • Reports are the ready-made screens: acquisition (where people came from), engagement (what they did) and monetisation.
  • Explorations let you build your own analysis: funnels, paths and segments.

Users, sessions and engagement

Know the difference between a user, a session and an engaged session, and what engagement rate means. Several questions test exactly these definitions.

Audiences group users by behaviour, such as "visited the pricing page but did not enquire". Linked to Google Ads, they can be used for remarketing.

Privacy and data settings

Data retention, consent and what GA4 does not collect. Know where these settings live.

Practise with real data for free

Reading is not enough. Two free ways to practise:

  1. Google's GA4 demo account. Google provides a demo property with real data from the Google Merchandise Store. Search "GA4 demo account" on Google's help centre to open it. Click through every report the course mentions.
  2. Your own small site. Set up GA4 on a free website or blog. Even a few visitors a day teaches you more than any video.

My study routine was simple: one course module, then 15 minutes finding the same thing in the demo account.

Test yourself with these questions

If you can answer these in your own words, you are close to ready:

  1. What is the difference between a property and a data stream?
  2. Which events does GA4 collect automatically on a website?
  3. How do you mark an event as a key event?
  4. When would you use an exploration instead of a standard report?
  5. What is an engaged session?
  6. How would you check which source brought the most key events last month?

After you pass

  • Add it to LinkedIn under Licenses and certifications with the credential link.
  • Write a one-page report on a real site's data. A short, honest report is a better portfolio piece than the certificate alone.
  • Learn Google Tag Manager next, then pair analytics with ads: Google Ads certification guide.

Questions people ask

Is the GA4 certification free?
Yes. The Google Analytics course and certification assessment on Google Skillshop are free.
What score do I need to pass?
80% or more, the same pass mark Google uses for its Skillshop certifications.
How long is the Google Analytics certificate valid?
One year. My own Google Analytics certificate was issued on 11 Oct 2026 and is valid until 11 Oct 2027.
Can I practise GA4 without my own website?
Yes. Google offers a free GA4 demo account with real data from the Google Merchandise Store. Open it from Google’s help page for the demo account.
What is an event in GA4?
Any interaction GA4 records, such as a page view, a scroll, a click or a form submit. Everything in GA4 is an event, which is the biggest change from the older Universal Analytics.
What is a key event?
An event you mark as important to your business, such as a lead form submit or a purchase. GA4 uses key events where older versions said conversions.
Do I need to know coding for GA4?
No. Basic setup needs no code if you use a website builder or Google Tag Manager. Developers help with custom events on complex sites.
What should I learn after the GA4 certification?
Google Tag Manager, so you can add tracking without editing code, and then Google Ads so you can measure what ads bring in.
