Meta Ad Library: How to Search Any Brand’s Ads for Free (and What to Learn From Them)
How to use the free Meta Ad Library to search the Facebook and Instagram ads any page is running, filter them, and turn what you find into better ads.

The short answer
The Meta Ad Library is a free public tool at facebook.com/ads/library that shows the active ads running across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Meta’s Audience Network. Choose a country and ad category, search by brand name or keyword, then filter by platform, media type and date to study what competitors are running right now.
The Meta Ad Library is the first thing I open before planning any Facebook or Instagram campaign. It is free, it shows the ads any page is running right now, and it saves you from guessing what works in your market.
Here is how to use it step by step, and how to turn what you see into better ads of your own.
What the Meta Ad Library is
Meta built the Ad Library as a transparency tool. It lists ads currently running across Meta's technologies: Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and the Audience Network.
For every ad you can usually see:
- The page that runs it.
- When it started running.
- The platforms it appears on.
- The creative: image, video or carousel, and the text.
- How many versions of the ad exist.
How to search, step by step
- Open facebook.com/ads/library on a laptop or phone browser.
- Choose your country, for example India.
- Choose the ad category: "All ads" for normal businesses. The other option covers ads about social issues, elections or politics.
- Type a brand name or a keyword in the search box.
- Pick a page from the drop-down to see only that advertiser's ads.
- Or press Enter to search the keyword across all ads, for example "IELTS coaching" or "2BHK".
- Use the filters: language, advertiser, platform (Facebook or Instagram), media type (image, video, meme, none), active status and impressions date.
Tip: search by keyword, not only by brand. You find competitors you did not know about.
What to look for
When I study an advertiser, I write down five things:
| What | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Start date | An ad running for weeks is one they keep paying for. That usually means it works |
| Number of versions | Many versions of one idea means they are testing it hard |
| Hook (first line or first 3 seconds) | This decides whether people stop scrolling |
| Offer | Free trial, demo, site visit, discount, free audit: what do they give to get the click? |
| Call to action and destination | Form, WhatsApp, website or app. Tells you how they handle leads |
A worked example
Say you sell spoken English classes in Lucknow (an example business). Search "spoken English" with country India and media type video.
You might notice:
- Most long-running ads open with a question in the first line.
- Several advertisers offer a free demo class.
- Many ads send people to WhatsApp instead of a long form.
That gives you three tests for your own campaign: a question hook, a free demo offer, and a click-to-WhatsApp button. None of this needs you to copy anyone.
What the library does not show
Be clear about the limits:
- No spend or results for normal ads in India. Spend and reach ranges are published for social issue, election and political ads.
- No detailed targeting for normal ads.
- Mostly active ads. When an ad stops, it usually drops out of view, except for the political category.
So treat what you see as clues, not proof.
Turn research into your own ads
- Collect 10 to 20 ads from your market in a sheet with the five columns above.
- Find the patterns: which hooks, offers and formats keep coming back?
- Write three of your own ads, each testing one different angle.
- Make your own creative. Use your product, your photos and your words.
- Launch and compare. My guide on how to run Meta ads step by step shows the setup, and Meta ads with Claude shows how I use AI to write variations faster.
Make it a weekly habit
Spend 15 minutes each Monday checking your top five competitors. New ads tell you about new offers, seasons and price moves before anyone announces them.

Questions people ask
- Is the Meta Ad Library free?
- Yes. Anyone can use it, and you do not even need to be logged in to Facebook to search most ads.
- Can I see how much a competitor spends on ads?
- Not for normal commercial ads in India. Spend and reach ranges are shown for ads about social issues, elections or politics. Some regions show extra details for other ads too.
- Does the library show old ads?
- It mainly shows ads that are active now. Ads about social issues, elections or politics are kept for longer. You can filter by active or inactive status where it is available.
- Can I see who an ad is targeting?
- Not in detail for normal commercial ads. You can see the page, the platforms, the start date and the creative, which already tells you a lot.
- How do I know if an ad is working for the competitor?
- You cannot know for sure, but an ad that has been running for weeks and appears in several versions is usually one the advertiser keeps paying for, so it is likely doing well.
- Can I copy a competitor’s ad?
- No. Learn the angle, offer and format, then make your own creative and words. Copying images or text can break copyright and Meta’s policies.
- Does it include Instagram ads?
- Yes. The library covers ads across Meta’s platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. Use the platform filter to see only Instagram.
- Is there a Meta Ad Library app?
- It works in any mobile browser at facebook.com/ads/library, so you do not need a separate app.
